Update: The Power Plan Needs a Safety Layer

Tangled Thistle’s current power-planning guide is right about coordination, but incomplete about the safety standard now available to frame the work. ANSI ES1.17-2025 adds an explicit assessment-and-documentation layer across installation, show and dismantling.

Tangled Thistle’s current power-planning guide is useful, but it is missing one important piece of the current standards landscape. ANSI ES1.17-2025, Event Safety — Event Lighting & Electrical Safety, is now a dedicated American National Standard for the application, assessment and documentation of safe electrical working practices during event installation, the show itself and dismantling.

This is exactly what the Corrections & Updates format is supposed to do.

Not manufacture a scandal. Not pretend every editorial refinement means the old article was disastrously wrong. Notice when the evidence or standards landscape gives us a more precise way to frame the work, say what was missing, and change the rule going forward.

Our existing article, The Extension Cord Is Not the Event Power Plan, gets several important things right. It tells planners to build an equipment map rather than count outlets. It tells vendors to provide their own requirements. It treats generators, cable routes, weather, lighting and catering loads as one coordinated system. It repeatedly keeps actual electrical work with qualified professionals.

What it does not do is surface the dedicated event-safety standard that now gives this work a clearer professional frame.

That omission matters because “power plan” can still sound like a capacity worksheet. ANSI ES1.17-2025 makes the larger point explicit: safe event electrical work is something to apply, assess and document across the full event lifecycle.

THE CORRECTION

A power plan is not complete because the loads add up

Capacity is one question. The updated editorial rule is broader: qualified event electrical work also needs an explicit safety assessment, appropriate documentation, clear responsibility, and consideration of installation, live operation and dismantling—not merely the moment guests are in the room.

What changed in the standards landscape

ANSI’s Board of Standards Review approved ANSI ES1.17-2025 on May 21, 2025 as a new American National Standard. ESTA’s published-document register lists it as Event Safety — Event Lighting & Electrical Safety. The Event Safety Alliance describes its scope as the application, assessment and documentation of safe electrical working practices during installation, show and dismantling of event electrical systems and equipment.

That lifecycle language is the part Tangled Thistle needs to inherit.

The old shorthand version of event power is:

What needs electricity, how much does it need, and where will we plug it in?

The better planning frame is:

What electrical system is being installed, who is qualified to assess it, how is safe work documented, what changes during the show, and what remains hazardous or energized during dismantling?

The planner still does not become the electrician. The planner becomes better at making sure the electrician or qualified production team is not receiving half an event.

Install, show, strike is a more honest event boundary

Event people are very good at treating the guest-facing hours as the event and everything around them as setup or cleanup.

That mental model is wrong in several production disciplines, and electrical work is one of them.

Cables are deployed during install. Temporary distribution is connected before guests arrive. Lighting systems are focused, tested and changed. Vendors plug in equipment after the first electrical plan was built. Wet weather can alter site conditions. Somebody adds a heater. Someone relocates a bar. A coffee vendor arrives with an appliance no one had on the equipment list. At strike, crews are tired, furniture is moving and systems are being disconnected while other departments are dismantling around them.

ANSI ES1.17-2025’s public scope explicitly spans installation, show and dismantling. Tangled Thistle should too.

That changes how we write the production schedule. “Electric complete by 3 p.m.” is not the whole electrical plan. The run of show should know who owns changes during the event, and the strike plan should know when systems are de-energized or removed by the responsible team before other departments work in the same space.

The exact technical procedures belong to qualified electrical professionals. The scheduling dependency belongs to everyone.

Documentation is not paperwork theater

The word documentation has a bad reputation because events produce documents no one reads. A 42-page production packet is not automatically safer than a four-page one. A laminated binder does not repel electricity.

The useful question is whether the people responsible for the electrical system have the information they need and whether material changes are visible to them.

Our existing power guide already asks for the right ingredients: equipment by location, vendor requirements, house service, generation, cable routes, catering loads, lighting and weather. The correction is to stop treating those ingredients as an informal planner worksheet if the event’s electrical complexity requires a documented safety process.

The planner-side questions become better

Who owns the complete electrical picture? Not which vendor owns each appliance—which qualified party sees the combined event system?

What information must vendors submit? Equipment, power requirements, location and other details requested by the venue or electrical team need a deadline.

What documentation is required for this event? Let the qualified professional, venue, insurer, permit process or authority determine the appropriate record.

Who approves changes? Moving, adding or substituting powered equipment can change the electrical picture after the first plan was reviewed.

What is the strike sequence? Dismantling should respect electrical shutdown and removal dependencies instead of letting every vendor unplug whatever appears nearest.

Lighting belongs inside the safety conversation, not beside it

The standard’s title matters: Event Lighting & Electrical Safety.

Tangled Thistle spends plenty of time defending lighting as atmosphere. Good. It is. It is also functional infrastructure.

Lighting That Still Works After the Room Fills already argues that event lighting has to support guest comfort, service and photography rather than merely produce a beautiful empty-room photograph. The safety update pushes that logic one step further: public and event-worker safety belong in the lighting brief too.

That does not mean every candlelit dinner needs to feel like an operating room. It means the lighting designer and venue must be able to preserve atmosphere without sacrificing the illumination needed for routes, work areas, transitions and other safety-critical conditions under the rules that apply to the event.

The beautifully dim staircase is still a staircase.

The planner should not perform electrical engineering by spreadsheet

One risk of publishing more specific safety language is that readers may think the next responsible step is to calculate more things themselves.

It is not.

Tangled Thistle’s role is to help the planner ask better system questions, catch missing handoffs and understand when a design decision creates production consequences. Electrical design, installation, testing, code compliance, grounding, bonding, overcurrent protection, temporary distribution and other technical work belong to appropriately qualified or licensed professionals under the requirements that apply to the site.

The correction is not “learn to wire the party.”

The correction is “stop handing the qualified team a partial party.”

BOUNDARY

An ANSI standard is not automatically the law of every wedding

ANSI ES1.17-2025 is an American National Standard. Its existence does not, by itself, mean every provision is automatically incorporated into every jurisdiction, venue contract or private event. Applicable electrical codes, adopted standards, permits, venue rules, insurer requirements, licensing rules and the authority having jurisdiction determine what is required on a specific project.

Why this is a correction rather than a brand-new article

Because the core Tangled Thistle advice already exists.

The Extension Cord Is Not the Event Power Plan says the planner should assemble the complete electrical picture and keep technical work with qualified professionals. That remains correct.

The problem is that the article leaves the reader with an equipment-and-coordination frame when a dedicated event-safety standard now gives us a stronger frame. A publication that claims to care about evidence should not quietly pretend that difference does not exist.

So the update is narrow and explicit:

Power is spatial. The complete equipment picture still comes first.

The planner coordinates information; technical electrical work remains with the appropriate professionals.

Assessment + documentation

Explicitly ask how the event’s safe electrical working practices are being assessed and documented.

Treat the electrical safety lifecycle as longer than the guest-facing event hours.

Small events do not need fake complexity

A twelve-person dinner in a restaurant private room and a 900-person outdoor production are not the same electrical system. The correction should not make small hosts feel as though they need an electrical command center because someone plugged in two lamps.

Scale the process to the actual risk and complexity under the venue’s requirements and professional judgment.

At a conventional venue with ordinary house service and modest vendor needs, the electrical process may be almost invisible to the planner because the building and venue team already own it. At a private property, tented site, outdoor production, large activation or event with extensive temporary distribution, the coordination and documentation burden can be much larger.

The useful question is not “is this a big event?” It is “how much temporary electrical system are we creating, and who is responsible for it?”

Private properties make the missing layer obvious

A ballroom arrives with walls, exits, power and an operating history. A field arrives with grass.

Once an event begins adding generators, distribution, tent lighting, catering equipment, climate control, restrooms, sound, decorative lighting and vendor work areas to private property, the electrical system stops being an amenity and becomes part of the temporary venue.

That is where production infrastructure belongs in the venue decision, not after the invitation goes out.

The dedicated safety standard does not change that argument. It makes the argument harder to wave away.

The final production meeting gets one new question

The final production meeting should not turn into a technical electrical review. That work should already be with the responsible team.

But it should confirm the handoff:

Who owns event electrical safety and approvals from load-in through strike, and how do late changes reach that person?

That one sentence is much more useful than asking whether “power is handled.”

Handled by whom? Through which phase? With which version of the plan?

The word handled has ended many production conversations before they became informative.

The revised Tangled Thistle rule

Here it is without ceremony:

Map the loads. Then map the safety ownership.

An event power plan should identify the complete powered system and its locations, route vendor requirements to the qualified electrical or production team, confirm the appropriate safety assessment and documentation, establish who controls changes, and treat installation, show and dismantling as one continuous electrical-safety lifecycle.

That is not as catchy as “bring more extension cords.”

It is considerably more useful.
