Good manners until dessert.

This page is the World’s first editorial chapter. The free Field Guide previews its identity and scope; the paid World Package supplies the complete environment, floral, culinary, styling and production system. Links to finished guides and packages appear as those files become available.

The night

Some evenings are better for having a rule in them. This one has a single rule and a deadline on it.

You arrive to a piano and a cream rug, and someone hands you a crystal flute with a thin string of bubbles climbing from a sugar cube at the bottom. The bubbles keep climbing for as long as you hold it, which is the most elegant thing a drink has ever done for anybody. There is a warm cheese puff, one or two. Half an hour later, everyone sits down to a proper supper at place cards, with a strand of pearls looped around every napkin and an old-fashioned instruction about whom to talk to.

It’s lovely. It’s also slightly unbearable, in a good way, because a mirror ball hangs perfectly still over the rug on the other side of the room, and nobody mentions it for two hours.

The chicken arrives at every place at the same moment, and the whole table turns from left to right, which turns out to be the most fun anyone has had with an etiquette rule in years. Dessert is one small cup of white chocolate cream with a single raspberry set dead center. Then the host puts down a spoon, and what happens next is the part you’ll talk about on the way home.

The room lets go once, and it doesn’t take it back.

What the World Folio holds

  • The Premium World Package: the room written so a host can make it, from the palette as materials to the light in every state of the night; the menu in the order it lands; the one change at the end of supper, done step by step; scale from two at a small table to a ballroom; three budgets; what slips first and the fix.
  • The Host Pack: the clock from three weeks out to the morning after, who does what, the room map, the cue sheet, the production menu, the make-ahead plan, how a guest declines, the strike, the shopping list and briefs, the printed pieces, the invite look card and the music.
  • Free, as part of the same night: a Salt Notes recipe for each of the six made items, and a Vanity or Vice look book on how to dress for it. They are named below and will be linked when they are live.

The room

Black and cream, with pearl, pale gold and exactly one lipstick red, the lacquer of the tray at the bar, until the glasses start collecting their own. Salon Cream on the floor-length linen, the paneling, the pleated lamp shades and the rug; Lacquer Black on the chairs, the rug’s border and the piano; Pearl on the strands and the votive glass; Pale Gold on thin glass rims and brass lamps; camellias massed white, blush and near-black red on their black-green leaves in low silver bowls you can see over, and tall in two silver urns of flowering branches. The light is brass lamps around the walls and votives in cream glass down the tables, and nothing aims at a face. On the other half of the room: a cream rug with a black border, salon chairs at its edge, a piano, and the ball. Formality is 4 of 5. The wrong version is Paris from a party-supply aisle: a cardboard tower, berets at the door, a pastel macaron tower, and a DJ who starts at arrival so nobody can hear the person beside them.

The table

On the cardWhat it is
PearlsChampagne over a bitters-soaked sugar cube that strings pearls up the glass all through supper. (VG, GF, DF)
PowderThe same flute, the same pearls, elderflower and lemon instead of wine. It’s the one with the twist. (0%, VG, GF, DF)
A Cheese Puff With MannersA warm cheese puff, one or two, and then everyone sits. (V; gluten-free on request)
Salon ChickenChicken, lemon and a sharp green, which is the whole supper. The sauce sits beside it, never on it. (GF)
Salon Chicken, celery-root plateThe same supper, with celery root roasted and cut like a steak, landing in the same second. (V, GF; VG on request)
Pearl and CreamWhite chocolate cream and a single berry set exactly in the center. (V, GF; dairy-free on request)

A Sancerre is poured as everyone sits and leaves the table when dessert arrives. Six recipes, one for each made item, are coming to Salt Notes. The look book is coming to Vanity or Vice. Both will be linked here when they are live.

Who it is for

For a bridal shower that wants to feel adult, a fortieth or a fiftieth, or a fashion luncheon with no intention of ending at three. Skip it for children, for a room with no real floor, or for a guest of honor who would rather dance from the first song.

Not on this page

The clock, the cue sheet, the room map, the recipe methods, the shopping list, the budgets, and exactly how the room changes at the end of supper. Those are the files.

Look book

How to dress for Pearls After Dark is coming to Vanity or Vice: one outfit that sits beautifully for two hours and turns for one, and the strand of pearls from your own napkin, worn your way.

This is not a Paris costume party, and it borrows no fashion house’s anything.

Atmosphere OS · Theme Atelier

Turn the mood into something a florist can quote.

Theme Atelier builds palette, materials, lighting and spatial mood into one system, then writes it in language a vendor can price. Every number it produces comes from a published rule, and the rulebook names the judgments it deliberately refuses to call rules.

Free to use, local-first in your browser, and there is no account until you ask for one.

Field notes and corrections

When a number here turns out to be wrong, you hear about it.

Three things arrive and nothing else. The new field note — bar rates, cover widths, service clearances, the arithmetic worked through on one real evening. A line when a new World or Mini Occasion opens, because a night only goes up once it can actually be thrown. And a correction whenever a rule in the published rulebook changes, or a number the tools rely on turns out to have been wrong. There is no weekly slot, because there is nothing weekly to put in it.

One email per field note or opening, plus corrections when a published figure moves. Unsubscribe from any of them.
