Above the Marquee

You live above the show. A terrace supper above a lit theater district: drinks at the edge, then the lamps come up and the table outranks the city. The palette, menu and the move.

You live above the show.

This page is the World’s first editorial chapter. The free Field Guide previews its identity and scope; the paid World Package supplies the complete environment, floral, culinary, styling and production system. Links to finished guides and packages appear as those files become available.

The night

The best seat in the theater district tonight has no view of a stage.

Downstairs it’s all doors and start times: a line at the box office, a crowd going in under the lights, somebody else’s name in bulbs. Up here, fourteen floors above it, is the night that remains. You arrive and you look out, and you should, because the glow coming up past the rail is worth a first look. You get a cold flute with something darker already waiting at the bottom of it, the street arriving as a faint hum, and half an hour at the edge with nobody hurrying you.

Then the lamps on the table come up, somebody says “supper,” and you sit where your card says. The chairs turn out to face each other rather than the skyline. The city doesn’t go anywhere. It just becomes the light behind the room, soft and gold over someone’s shoulder, and the table takes over: crab cakes at every place at once, duck with crisp skin and dark cherries, a red Burgundy poured by the host, and at the end a small cold custard with one flake of real gold laid on it at the table, which is the only theater anyone performs all night.

By the time the shows let out downstairs, you’re finding your coat. You never once stood in a line.

It’s an anniversary supper first, and just as good for a rehearsal dinner that deserves a real table, a birthday for someone who has seen every show twice, or a small company dinner that wants the atmosphere without anyone’s logo. And it is made for people who love the theater and would rather not eat dinner inside a theme about it.

What the World Folio holds

  • The Premium World Package: the night written so a host can make it; the seat-by-seat way of choosing a table above a view, and the worst chair that the host keeps for themselves; the room, its light in every state, the flowers and the menu; the moment supper is called, step by step; scale from a window table for two to a sheltered venue for a hundred and twenty; three ways to pay for it; what goes wrong up high, and the fix.
  • The Host Pack: the clock from three weeks out to the morning after, who does what, the terrace map and the cue sheet, service timing, make-ahead and decline-and-recovery, the strike, the production menu, five sizes with budgets, the shopping list and the rentals, every printed piece, the invite look card, and the music.
  • The recipes: the full set for the seven dishes and drinks the kitchen makes, with the Burgundy to pour, each scaled for eighteen.
  • Free, as part of the same night: a Salt Notes recipe for the dishes and drinks, and a Vanity or Vice look book on how to dress for a rail and a lamp. They’ll be linked here when they’re live.

The room

Deep navy night and charcoal stone, one long table in warm-white linen under a navy-and-cream striped awning with a scalloped edge, dark walnut chairs with navy cushions, silver on the table, a little gilt at the edges of things, and ruby glowing like jewels: a lush, low run of white and ruby ranunculus, dahlias and black-eyed anemones in silver on a ruby velvet runner, ruby and amber votives between them, emerald glass beside the wine. The light is four shaded lamps down the center of the table, warm and at face height, low while everyone looks out and full once supper is called, so the table is brighter than anything past the rail. The district stays a soft band of glow far below. Nothing plays while you look out; after supper is called, something quiet, a piano or some strings, under the sound of the forks, until the gold goes on. Formality is 4 of 5, dinner-formal without black tie. The wrong version is the rooftop Broadway party: a red velvet curtain, bulb letters spelling a name, program menus, masks, gold stars on the cloth, and every chair facing the skyline.

Who it is for

For anniversaries, rehearsal dinners, milestone birthdays and small company dinners, on a terrace or roof approved for gatherings, or in a high room with windows. Skip it for a party that wants to dance, for children, for any outdoor space that hasn’t been approved for people, and for anyone who wants the view to be the event.

Not on this page

The clock, the seat-by-seat worksheet, the terrace map, the cue sheet, the recipe methods, the shopping list, the budgets and exactly how the moment at the table is run. Those are in the files.

Look book

How to dress for Above the Marquee is coming to Vanity or Vice: one outfit for half an hour at a rail in a breeze and two hours at a lamp-lit table.

This isn’t a Broadway party, and nothing on this table has a show’s name on it.

A palette is not yet a decision.

Atmosphere OS holds the color, the material, the light and the room in one object, so moving any of them shows you what it does to the rest. Costs come back as indicative bands and never as quotes, which is the difference between planning and pretending.

Field notes and corrections

When a number here turns out to be wrong, you hear about it.

Three things arrive and nothing else. The new field note — bar rates, cover widths, service clearances, the arithmetic worked through on one real evening. A line when a new World or Mini Occasion opens, because a night only goes up once it can actually be thrown. And a correction whenever a rule in the published rulebook changes, or a number the tools rely on turns out to have been wrong. There is no weekly slot, because there is nothing weekly to put in it.

One email per field note or opening, plus corrections when a published figure moves. Unsubscribe from any of them.
