The Rigger Is Looking for a Load Path, Not a Mood Board
A rigger is not evaluating whether your suspended floral cloud is beautiful. They are trying to determine what it weighs, where that load goes, whether the building can take it, how it gets installed, and what changes when someone moves it six feet on Friday afternoon.

The mood board says floating. The rigger has a different vocabulary: weight, point, span, attachment, access, load path, lift, labor, inspection. That difference is not a creativity problem. It is the part of the process that lets the beautiful thing stay over everyone’s head instead of becoming a very expensive floor arrangement.
This is not a disguised interview. Tangled Thistle did not put invented sentences in a rigger’s mouth and call it vendor insight. This Vendor POV is a steelman built from current entertainment-rigging standards, public venue rigging requirements and the actual scope of professional rigging work.
That distinction matters because rigging is one of those event categories people describe casually until the ceiling gets involved. A florist says floral cloud. A designer says draped canopy. An AV team says lighting truss. A client says giant hanging moon. The rigger hears four separate suspended-load problems, each with a different weight, footprint, attachment method, center of gravity, access requirement and consequence if the information is wrong.
Nothing about that makes the idea less romantic. It just means romance has mass.
THE VENDOR-SIDE TRANSLATION
“Can we hang this?” is not one question
It means: What is it? How much does it weigh? Where do you want it? What supports it? Which approved building points receive the load? How is the load distributed? What hardware connects it? How do crews reach it? How long is install and strike? What happens if the design changes?
The rigger is responsible for the part nobody can see
Entertainment rigging is a specialty because the work sits directly inside life safety. The Entertainment Technician Certification Program describes arena rigging as the temporary suspension of objects using chain hoists and truss systems across arenas, convention spaces and theatrical environments. ETCP is unusually plain about why the work is serious: the positions involve the health and safety of technicians, performers and audiences.
That is the useful frame. The rigger is not grading your taste. The rigger is protecting a load path.
In 2026, ESTA published ANSI E1.56-2026 for permanent rigging support points. The standard covers the design, fabrication, installation, inspection and documentation of the points attached to permanent facility structure that support rigging loads. In practical event language: the dot on the ballroom ceiling is not decorative punctuation. It is an engineered support condition with a location and a load rating.
This is why “the ballroom can rig” is almost useless as a planning answer. Which points? At what ratings? In what pattern? With what house rules? Can the desired object land under those points without building a secondary truss system to get it there? Does the venue require its own rigging team to make the building connection? Is the airwall track off limits? Can a lift physically reach the work area once the room is carpeted and partially set?
The ceiling is a map. Ask for the map early.

A useful rigging request is a technical packet, not a Pinterest link
Encore’s current rigging standards are a useful public example of what professional venue-side review actually expects. Their submission process asks for rigging requests at least 21 days before load-in. The safety review includes point-load calculations and applied loads across trusses. The rigging plot has to show all flown equipment over a reflected ceiling plan with hang points. Drawings are submitted in actual CAD formats.
That is a long way from forwarding a rendering with, “Can we do something like this?”
Renderings are useful. They tell everyone what the finished composition is supposed to accomplish. But the rigger needs the layer the rendering politely omits: where the weight lives.
Before you ask for a rigging quote, answer these
What is suspended? Not “decor.” Name the actual object or system.
What are the dimensions? Width, length, height and any irregular shape that changes the footprint.
What is the real installed weight? Include frames, hardware, cables, fabric, floral mechanics, wet foam, vessels, water, greenery, signage, screens and anything else that goes up with it.
Where does it sit in the room? Give coordinates or a scaled plan, not “over the dance floor-ish.”
How does the object accept rigging? Through-bolted attachment points, manufacturer-rated pick points or another engineered connection—not a decorative frame someone hopes is sturdy.
What does the venue allow? House rigging, exclusive hardware, required chain motors, approved lifts, prohibited attachment surfaces and established point ratings can all change the method.
When can it be installed and struck? Access windows, room turns, flooring, furniture and other vendors affect the call.
What might still change? Weight, location, shape, added lighting, new scenic elements or an aerial component can force a new review.
The 21-day request is not ceremonial paperwork
Encore’s public standard asks for submissions at least 21 days before load-in and warns that shorter notice may create rush charges. That is not because riggers enjoy calendars more than other people. The advance window gives somebody time to review loads, compare the design with the building, determine staffing and equipment, resolve conflicts, price the work and send a version to the onsite team that can actually be executed.
Now put that against ordinary event behavior.
The suspended floral piece is approved by the client. Then it gets fuller. The sign gets heavier. Lighting decides to share the truss. The band adds a speaker. The florist moves the installation because the dance floor moved. Someone realizes the centerline is wrong in the rendering. The venue says the nearest point has a lower rating than expected. All of this happens after the first quote.
From the designer’s side, these can feel like small creative refinements. From the rigging side, they are changes to the thing being calculated.
THE RULE WORTH KEEPING
If weight, position or attachment changes, assume the rigging question changed too.
Do not move a flown element and treat the old approval like a transferable parking permit. Ask what needs to be recalculated.
The word “point” deserves more respect
One of the easiest ways to misunderstand rigging is to hear “the venue has a 2,000-pound rigging capacity” and turn that into permission to hang 2,000 pounds anywhere.
That is not how the useful question works. Rigging plans are about where loads are applied and how they travel through the system. Venue CAD files identify established rigging points and their load ratings. The arrangement of those points relative to your design can determine whether the easiest solution is a direct hang, a truss structure spanning between points, a ground-supported alternative or a different design altogether.
The room may be capable of supporting an ambitious overhead treatment while the exact three feet of ceiling you fell in love with are the inconvenient part.
That is not a reason to surrender. It is a reason to design with the building instead of against a ceiling plan you have not seen.
“It’s just a banner” is how trouble introduces itself
Rigging standards do not suddenly become serious only when the chandelier is enormous. Encore’s public requirements for décor, signs and scenic elements ask for construction details, a materials list, attachment points, pictures of suspended items and their attachment methods. Their onsite team may refuse to suspend something that arrives with a different weight or unsafe construction.
That is the part the event industry should steal for ordinary design practice.
Do not let the word decor downgrade the engineering question. A scenic wall behaves like architecture when it can fall. A hanging sign becomes an overhead load when people stand under it. Draping is not weightless because fabric moves prettily. Floral installations gain surprising mass through mechanics, water and structure long before the first bloom is attached.

Lifts are part of the design whether the client sees them or not
Overhead work requires access. Encore’s current standard requires a scissor or boom lift for rigging calls and requires qualified operators for its lifts. It also limits what kinds of lifts may enter venues and asks that lift rentals be confirmed in advance.
This creates one of my favorite invisible event-design collisions: the perfect overhead plan meets the finished floor.
If a lift needs to cross the room, when does flooring go down? Can it travel over the finished surface? Are doors tall and wide enough? Can it reach the center of the room without furniture? Is there a slope, threshold or elevator involved? Does the building permit that piece of equipment in the ballroom at all?
These are not rigger details. They are sequence details, which makes them event-design details.
If the ceiling treatment must go in before flooring, the floor vendor needs to know. If the lift has to exit before tables arrive, rentals need to know. If the florist needs to finish mechanics at trim height, their crew call has to coexist with the rigging call. This is why the final production meeting has to decide actual dependencies, not merely repeat each vendor’s arrival time in a polite circle.
House rigging is not a surprise fee if you asked the right question
Rigging exclusivity varies by property. Encore’s own public standard says venue-by-venue rules may make the house provider exclusive for chain hoists, attachment hardware, rigged truss, airwall hanging, banners, ground-supported truss or lifts. It also states that Encore makes the connections to the ceiling in the venues where those standards apply.
This is exactly the kind of information that belongs in venue intelligence before a design is sold.
If your concept depends on extensive overhead production, ask during sourcing who controls the ceiling, which equipment is exclusive, how labor minimums work, when drawings are due, what review fees apply, which CAD files are available and what happens when the plan changes. A ballroom with beautiful rigging capability may be perfect. It may also carry a production structure that materially changes the budget.
The bad version is discovering that after the floral proposal has been signed.
What a good “no” sounds like
There are lazy noes in every industry. There are also useful technical noes. Learn the difference.
A useful rigger’s no contains a constraint you can design against:
Too much load here
Can the element get lighter, split into modules or move under stronger points?
No approved point there
Can truss span from usable points, or does ground support solve the location problem?
Attachment is not acceptable
Can the scenic or floral fabricator build real rated pick points into the object?
Not enough install time
Can the design simplify, pre-rig, arrive more complete or receive an earlier room-access window?
That is the conversation worth having. Not “why are they being difficult?” but “which physical condition is saying no, and what change would turn it into yes?”
The rigger would rather meet the idea while it is still cheap to change
This may be the whole Vendor POV in one sentence.
Bring rigging into the design early enough that the answer can shape the idea without destroying it. Do not finish the ceiling composition, sell it emotionally, order the fabrication and then introduce the person responsible for keeping it overhead.
The glamorous version of collaboration is everyone standing around a rendering saying how extraordinary it will be. The useful version is somebody asking what it weighs before extraordinary gets a purchase order.
That is not less creative. It is how ambitious work survives contact with the room.
