Desert Cinema

A screening room in the middle of nowhere. A high-desert courtyard dinner that becomes a real outdoor screening once it's dark. The room, the menu, and the minute the wall turns into a picture.

A screening room in the middle of nowhere.

This page is the World’s first editorial chapter. The free Field Guide previews its identity and scope; the paid World Package supplies the complete environment, floral, culinary, styling and production system. Links to finished guides and packages appear as those files become available.

The night

Owning a projector is nothing special. The trick is making a whole room stop competing with it for an hour and a half, and then giving the room back.

The trouble with dinner and a film at home is that the two halves fight over the same room, and the kitchen light usually wins. This one lets dinner finish first. It starts while the last light is turning the courtyard walls from sand to rose, with a cup of charred corn and green chile and a cold red that tastes of pepper. Dinner is long and loud under the portal, at a table with no screen anywhere near it. The pale wall at the end of the courtyard is only a wall, with a lamp’s shadow on it, and nobody explains it.

Then the sky goes properly black. The lamps step down, the kitchen goes quiet, and a clean rectangle of light appears on the plaster. The seats have been facing it all evening. You take one on your way over, a short, smoky drink in your hand and a wool throw on the chair, and for ninety minutes the desert disappears and a picture takes its place. Every seat sees all of it. Nothing is served while it runs, so nobody has to get up for anything.

When the screen goes black there are warm peaches and cold cream, a few more stars than there were, and a lot to say.

What the World Folio holds

  • The Premium World Package: the courtyard written so a host can build it, the light in each state of the evening, the menu and how service moves around the picture, the turn itself, what to do from a sofa for two to a licensed screening room for a hundred and twenty, three budgets, and what goes wrong first.
  • The Host Pack: the clock from three weeks out to the morning after, who does what, the courtyard map and seat map, the cue sheet, the make-ahead schedule, how a guest declines, the strike, the shopping list, the printed pieces and the invite look card.
  • Free, as part of the same night: a Salt Notes recipe for each of the five made dishes and drinks, and a Vanity or Vice look book on what to wear.

The room

Adobe, bone, black, a late-summer amber, turquoise-gray and a single line of chile red.The walls are thick and plastered and rounded at the edges, with a covered portal along one side and raked gravel underfoot. There’s a long dark wood table with an amber linen runner, dressed lush and low with late-summer market flowers, dahlias, chamisa, hollyhocks and sage in bone stoneware among bowls of peaches and plums, and there are low armchairs and a bench in two staggered rows with plain undyed wool throws on them, because the desert gets cold after dark, not because the room needed one more object.A turquoise-gray glazed jug holds water, and the napkins are chile red. Nothing is borrowed from anyone’s pattern book, and there are no flowers, no skull on the bar and nothing on fire anywhere. At dinner the light is warm and shaded; for the film it steps down to a few low path lights and the beam itself. Formality is 2 of 5, good clothes worn easily. Above the wall the dark goes on for miles, and more stars keep turning up the longer the film runs.

The table

On the cardWhat it is

Steak, Pot Beans, and a Chile Line — mushroom plateThe same plate with grilled king oyster mushrooms where the steak would be. (VG · GF · DF)

Cold Red, Hot Plate (poured)A young Mencía from Bierzo, lightly chilled, through dinner.

Every dish on the card is gluten-free as written. Five recipes are coming to Salt Notes, and the look book to Vanity or Vice; both will be linked here when they’re live.

Who it is for

For a film night that deserves a better name, a dinner for people who make things, or a birthday that would rather watch something good together than play a game. Skip it if you want the film as background, if the guest list includes children, or if you can’t sit in the worst seat the night before and check it.

Not on this page

How the turn is actually run, the clock, the seat map and the test that fills it, the cue sheet, the recipe methods, the shopping list, the budgets and the room map. All of that is in the Folio, where a host needs it, and none of it belongs on the page a guest reads.

Look book

What to wear to Desert Cinema is on Vanity or Vice: dressing for dinner in the last warm light and a film in the cold, with three women at the projector stand.

This isn’t a Santa Fe movie night. Nothing here is borrowed from anyone’s culture, and the only thing on the wall is light.

A palette is not yet a decision.

Atmosphere OS holds the color, the material, the light and the room in one object, so moving any of them shows you what it does to the rest. Costs come back as indicative bands and never as quotes, which is the difference between planning and pretending.

Field notes and corrections

When a number here turns out to be wrong, you hear about it.

Three things arrive and nothing else. The new field note — bar rates, cover widths, service clearances, the arithmetic worked through on one real evening. A line when a new World or Mini Occasion opens, because a night only goes up once it can actually be thrown. And a correction whenever a rule in the published rulebook changes, or a number the tools rely on turns out to have been wrong. There is no weekly slot, because there is nothing weekly to put in it.

One email per field note or opening, plus corrections when a published figure moves. Unsubscribe from any of them.
