Rumor Started at Dinner

Everyone at this table already has a story. None of them are true. At every place, a folded card holds a kind, absurd, invented rumor about you, and what you do with it is entirely up to you.

Everyone at this table already has a story. None of them are true.

This page is the World’s first editorial chapter. The free Field Guide previews its identity and scope; the paid World Package supplies the complete environment, floral, culinary, styling and production system. Links to finished guides and packages appear as those files become available.

The night

There is a kind of being talked about that costs you nothing and makes you more interesting, and almost nobody gets to have it. Real gossip arrives late, is wrong in a way that stings, and cannot be answered. This dinner hands every guest the other kind.

At each place there is a small folded card, and inside it is a rumor about you: invented, kind, absurd, completely untrue. You can drop it into the conversation as if everyone already knew. You can deny it far too hard. You can leave the card folded and eat an excellent dinner, and nobody will say a word about it.

Somewhere around the main course two stories that have nothing to do with each other turn out to be about the same pie contest, and the table becomes one conversation. By the time the plates are cleared, a room of people has built a fiction together without anyone being the joke. The night has a move, the Non-Denial, and you will know it when you see it.

What the Premium World Package and Host Pack will hold

  • The Premium World Package: the room written so a host can make it; how to write a rumor that is funny, safe and playable, and how to check it; the small table and the full room; what to cut first; the menu names and how service feels; the printed pieces, named.
  • The Host Pack: the clock from two weeks out; who does what; the table and room maps; what fails first and the fix; how a guest declines, before the night and at the table.
  • Free, alongside: a Salt Notes recipe for each of the seven made items, and a Vanity or Vice look book on how to dress for this dinner. Both are named here and will be linked when they are live.

The room

A round table in a room with soft surfaces and a door that closes, because a rumor delivered at volume is no longer a rumor. The colors:

  • Dusty Rose — #B05A6E
  • Ink Salon — #1F1426
  • Table Cream — #F3E2C4
  • Wine Smoke — #6E1F3D
  • Velvet Shadow — #2B1433
  • Parchment Blush — #EFC9B8
  • Lacquer Walnut — #4B2414
  • Crystal Smoke — #8C6585
  • Garnet Hearsay, the ranunculus and dark dahlias among the roses — #7A1631
  • Whisper Gold, the chargers and the gilt rims — #C4943E
  • Cherry Lip Flash, one hard red, kept for a single moment — #D41F4E

The materials are a floor-length linen cloth, velvet chair seats, smoked glass and uncoated cotton card.

The light is at face height, from linen-shaded lamps at the edge of the room and small enclosed votives in smoked glass on the table, so that everyone can read everyone else’s face. Those votives are the only flame, and they stay in their glass.

Music plays while people arrive, a quiet instrumental trio you can talk under, and stops when they sit; it comes back with coffee.

You will notice the envelope propped against one water glass long before you are told anything about it.

Formality 3 of 5, a three: creative cocktail.

The wrong version is a murder mystery, a truth game or a roast. This is none of them.

The table

Place in the nightNameWhat it is
First biteYou Didn’t Hear It from MeA small egg gone pink at the edges, soft inside, a few beads of roe. One bite.
The turnSo I’m ToldWarm crab and soft leeks baked under a thin crust. Eat it while you’re listening.
The mainWho Told You About the Chicken?Chicken braised in red wine, already cut for your fork, on soft potato.
The sharp oneWith a Grain of SaltBitter leaves, a sharp dressing, one flake of salt. Believe it or don’t.
The last biteJust Between UsTwo tiny hazelnut cookies, a little chocolate between them. One each, with coffee.
The mixed drinkRose, AllegedlyVodka and rosé aperitif wine, stirred cold. You’ll smell the rose before you taste anything.
The zero-proofWord Gets AroundRed currant, pink peppercorn and lemon. The warmth arrives late. Same glass, same tray. 0%
The wineCerasuolo, Poured Without CommentA dark rosé from Abruzzo. It has something in common with the chicken.
Eaten with a fork or a spoon in one hand, because the other hand will be busy. Allergies declared with the reply get their own plate, first.

The recipes for all seven made items will be on Salt Notes, and the look book on Vanity or Vice. They are named here and will be linked when they are published.

Who it is for

For a table of people who know each other at least a little: close friends, two families before a wedding, a book club that has run out of books, a birthday with one honoree whose rumor is the best on the table. Its natural size is eight to twelve at one round table, where everybody can eventually hear everybody. More dinner parties live here.

Skip it if the guests are strangers, or if anyone at the table is living through something public and painful this month. And skip it if what you actually want is a murder mystery. That is a different evening, with a box and a script.

How to decline any part of it

Before the night, reply “plain place.” You’ll still find a folded card at your seat, the same size and paper as everyone else’s, and inside it says nothing is being said about you tonight. Nobody else will know. At the table, leave your card folded, and nobody will mention it, not even kindly. You never have to read anyone else’s card, and nobody will ask to see yours. You can stop playing at any point. If you’d rather not watch the Non-Denial, step out; it’s over in about a minute. Not drinking: Word Gets Around comes in the same glass, on the same tray, with the same sentence.

Accessibility

Every seated course is eaten with one hand: there’s no knife at any place, and the chicken is cut in the kitchen. The light sits at face height, so anyone who relies on seeing a face to follow a voice can, and the room is chosen for soft surfaces and a closing door so nobody strains to hear a quiet sentence. The table stays small enough that the whole of it can be heard from any seat. Any card, the menu included, comes in large print on request, printed the same way, so it looks like every other. Allergies are asked with the reply and that plate is checked and served first. The zero-proof is its own drink, in the same glass.

What isn’t on this page

The clock, the maps, how to write and check the rumors, the recipe methods, the shopping list, the budget and how the move is done. Those are the files.

Look book

On Vanity or Vice: Rumor Started at Dinner — how to show up. How to dress to be interesting from across a table, with one accessory near the face that makes no sound when you turn your head. Named here; linked when it’s live.

This page is the World’s first editorial chapter. The free Field Guide previews its identity and scope; the paid World Package supplies the complete environment, floral, culinary, styling and production system. Links to finished guides and packages appear as those files become available. They’ll hold the clock, the maps, the cues, the recipes, and what to do when a story lands wrong.

Nobody at this table is a suspect, a character or the evening’s entertainment; nothing on any card is true.

Atmosphere OS · Theme Atelier

Turn the mood into something a florist can quote.

Theme Atelier builds palette, materials, lighting and spatial mood into one system, then writes it in language a vendor can price. Every number it produces comes from a published rule, and the rulebook names the judgments it deliberately refuses to call rules.

Field notes and corrections

When a number here turns out to be wrong, you hear about it.

Three things arrive and nothing else. The new field note — bar rates, cover widths, service clearances, the arithmetic worked through on one real evening. A line when a new World or Mini Occasion opens, because a night only goes up once it can actually be thrown. And a correction whenever a rule in the published rulebook changes, or a number the tools rely on turns out to have been wrong. There is no weekly slot, because there is nothing weekly to put in it.

One email per field note or opening, plus corrections when a published figure moves. Unsubscribe from any of them.
